Learning tips now live online

Parents can get tips on incorporating learning into everyday life with a new website the federal government has launched.

What do cooking, gardening, car trips and pets have in common?

They can all be turned into educational experiences by parents looking to help their children.

The federal government has launched a new Learning Potential website with ideas on how parents of primary students can use everyday activities to build on what they're doing at school.

It includes suggestions for building literacy and numeracy practice into things like cooking, shopping and sports.

The website also has games and videos for practicing specific skills and suggestions for offline games and activities parents can be involved in with their children.

It is divided into age groups and is linked to topics in the national curriculum.

"Once the flurry of books, school uniforms and lunch boxes are taken care of, we know that parents turn their attention to how best to support their child's learning at school," Education Minister Simon Birmingham said on launching the website on Monday.

"This new website gives parents access to the resources that teachers are using in the classroom, adapted for the home environment."

It complements the government's Learning Potential app, which offers suggestions for activities to do with children from birth through to teenage years.
