Lehmann hopeful for NZ tour return

Coach Darren Lehmann is hopeful he'll be cleared soon to join the Australian team on their tour of New Zealand, after suffering deep vein thrombosis.

National cricket team coach Darren Lehmann is optimistic he will be cleared later this week to rejoin the Australian side on their New Zealand tour.

Lehmann said on Sunday he was recovering well after being hospitalised a week ago by a bout deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a condition he has suffered previously.

He hoped by as soon as next weekend he might be allowed to travel to New Zealand, where the three-match one day international series against the Black Caps begins on Wednesday in Auckland and concludes on Monday week in Hamilton ahead of the two-Test series.

"It's just about hopefully getting medical clearance later on in the week and see where we go from there and join the New Zealand group," said Lehmann in Sydney.

"But until medical clearance comes through to fly, I'll have to wait and see.

"I'm feeling pretty confident. I feel a lot better now.

"I've had some good care and it's been a nice relaxing week, although watching us not play so well (losing the opening two T20s badly to India) hasn't been that relaxing."

Having suffered DVT previously, Lehmann has some idea of what he needs to reduce the prospect of it recurring on future long distance flights that come with his job.

"I've got to wear Skins and walk around and not sleep on the plane," Lehmann said.

In his absence assistant coach Michael Di Venuto took the reins for the three-match T20 series against India and will continue in the role for the one-dayers in NZ until Lehmann should return.

Lehmann revealed the composition of the squad for the upcoming T20 world championship in India was close to being settled.

"We're pretty close to our squad now, there's obviously a couple of spots up for grabs," Lehmann said.

"But we're pretty close to where we want to go and how we want to go about it.

"We're having a good chance to see some young guys perform at the next level after really good BBL performances, so that's important for the future as well."
