Pat Cummins could be set for an early Test return, with Australian coach Darren Lehmann tempted to take the exciting quick to India in February.
The injury-plagued 23-year-old hasn't played a Test since his sensational debut as an 18-year-old against South Africa in 2011.
But his impressive return to one-day cricket against New Zealand after a 15-month layoff has reminded Australia's selectors of his talent.
After a slow start in the series opener in Sydney, Cummins took 4-41 in Canberra on Tuesday to help Australia reclaim the Chappell-Hadlee trophy.
Cummins claimed the key wickets of Martin Guptill and captain Kane Williamson, while regularly hitting 150km/h.
Lehmann has long dreamed of having the luxury of playing Cummins and fellow injury-prone quick James Pattinson, who recently returned to grade cricket, alongside Mitch Starc and Josh Hazlewood.
And he says Cummins remains a chance of joining the Test side in India, despite having no opportunity to play in the Sheffield Shield before the tour.
"When you get someone like that who's coming back and just goes bang like that, with that performance in Canberra, you go 'wow, we just want him in'," Lehmann said on Thursday.
"So you've got to sit back and work out what the best way to go about it is.
"It's very difficult when they're young, fast bowlers but god, they're exciting to watch."
Cummins will play in Friday's final one-day international against New Zealand before turning his attention to the Big Bash League.
He is also likely to feature in January's one-day series against Pakistan before playing some form of four-day cricket, Lehmann said.
"We're slowly, slowly with him," he said.
"But it's just exciting to see. I think everyone's dream is to see Cummins, Pattinson, Starc and Hazlewood all in the one side. That would be fantastic. It would be like the West Indies of the '80s."
While the India tour may come too soon, the 2017-18 homes Ashes series is likely to present a golden opportunity for both Cummins and Pattinson to return to the Test side.
Australian selector Mark Waugh this week cautioned against rushing Cummins back too quickly, saying the the team had paid the price for doing so in the past.
"He hasn't played any four-day cricket," Waugh said.
"I think his program is Big Bash and then maybe a Shield match early next year."
