Leicester have moved another step closer to the Premier League as the Championship leaders eased to a 2-0 victory over promotion rivals Burnley.

Nigel Pearson's side were already firm favourites to reach the top-flight and that lucrative prize is now within touching distance after the Foxes handed Burnley their first home league defeat for over a year.

Leicester are 16 points clear of third placed QPR and look certain to secure automatic promotion sooner rather than later.

Despite their defeat, Burnley are also still well placed to go up automatically as they hold a 10-point advantage over QPR, although Harry Redknapp's team can cut the gap to seven points with a win over Blackpool later on Saturday.

Former Burnley striker David Nugent returned to haunt his old club as he put Leicester ahead 10 minutes before half-time.

It was New Zealand international Chris Wood, on as a first half substitute, who created the opener.

After breaking behind the Burnley defence Wood turned back and found Nugent, who shuffled the ball on to his left foot and bent a fine finish into the bottom corner.

That was another bitter blow for Sean Dyche's team, who had already lost star striker Sam Vokes to injury earlier in the half.

Burnley felt they should have had a penalty when both Jeff Schlupp and Matty James appeared to handle in the area, but referee Chris Foy, the target of Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho's wrath after sending off two Blues stars in a defeat at Aston Villa recently, instead awarded a free-kick for a push on the latter.

With 12 minutes to go Wood put the result beyond doubt when the striker chased down a long punt and nudged Michael Duff out of the way before firing past Clarets goalkeeper Tom Heaton.
