Best-selling author Kathy Lette hopes to bring her first live comedy stage show on tour to Australia next year.

She describes her Girls Night Out show as a "psychological striptease" and will give audiences a small taste of what's in store when she performs at this weekend's Canberra Writers Festival.

Then it's back to her home in England where she has 15 shows lined up before Christmas.

"It's just like a girls night out when the first bit is fun and laughs and jokes and anecdotes and then after so many drinks you get a bit serious and everyone strips off to their underwear," the Aussie author told AAP.

Meanwhile, Lette is poised to release details next week about a deal to turn her latest literary hit Best Laid Plans into an eight-hour TV series.

Her first best-seller Puberty Blues was made into a film in 1981, and 21 years later became a TV series on the Ten Network.

Another one of her novels, Mad Cows, was also made into a film starring Joanna Lumley and Anna Friel.

Lette says Best Laid Plans is her favourite book among the string of bestsellers she's written.

The novel, which has won rave reviews, is about a middle class woman arrested for trying to hire a prostitute for her son who has autism.

"It's a fun book and it's got a fast pace so it picks the reader up and whizzes them along this good storyline, but underneath there's the serious theme of autism," says Lette, whose 26-year-old son Julius has autism.

"I always think if you can disarm with charm in some ways you've got a much better chance of getting your message across.

"And the message from the book is to be less judgmental of people who are different and let's celebrate idiosyncrasies and eccentricities and that kind of thing."
