Doctors demanding lockout laws because they don't like treating victims is equivalent to teachers demanding parents keep dumb kids at home, Liberal Democrat David Leyonhjelm says.

Senator Leyonhjelm says lockout laws introduced to curb alcohol-fuelled violence have made a mess of Sydney's nightlife, creating staggering job losses and venue closures in Kings Cross.

He says doctors, police or paramedics demanding the lockouts should find another job, writing in Friday's Australian Financial Review: "There is something unbecoming about upper middle-class professionals whining about their (well-paid) jobs."
