Liberal Democrat senator David Leyonhjelm wants the sale of fireworks legalised across Australia.

The sale of fireworks is only legal in Tasmania and the Northern Territory but Senator Leyonhjelm believes adults should be able to buy them regardless of where they live, even if some people are likely to get hurt.

"Unfortunately, the nanny mentality has intruded to this area to the point where we're not allowed to have fun because we might hurt ourselves," he told ABC radio on New Years' Eve.
