A new washing machine unveiled by South Korean home-appliances maker LG has a second washing drum for small loads.
As demonstrated at the CES technology fair in the US this month, the extra drum is concealed in a drawer at floor level, with its own separate controls in the upper edge of the appliance's drawer.
The Twin Wash concept is aimed at users in a hurry who need to wash a few delicate items of clothing at the same time as they put whites through a heavy laundering in the upper drum.
Following a lead from other appliance makers, LG also showed a fridge with a separate compartment for frequently needed food items.
That helps reduce the number of times the main fridge door is opened and reduces energy consumption by the refrigerator motor.
LG said it was also expanding its range of voice-controlled household appliances.
Users can use an LG smart-watch to issue commands to an LG oven, air conditioner, audio system, washer and dryer, and even a vacuum cleaner.
