Unconfirmed media reports say former AFL player Liam Jurrah has been arrested in Alice Springs.

Police said two men, aged 24 and 32, were arrested after a "violent altercation" in Alice Springs about 3am Thursday morning.

Superintendent Brent Warren says police were investigating the alleged assault of three women.

"Both alleged offenders remain in police custody," Mr Warren said in a statement.

"No charges have been laid," he said.

Media are reporting that Jurrah, who is aged 24, was arrested at the 24 Hour Store on Gap Road near the heart of Alice Springs.

Supt Warren said investigations were continuing with officers still speaking with victims and witnesses involved in this incident.

If confirmed, the arrest would be the latest legal problem for Jurrah, who failed to appear in an Adelaide court on Thursday, where he was facing an aggravated assault charge.

His lawyer Joanna Caracoussis said he was still in the Northern Territory where he is to attend his grandfather's upcoming funeral.

Jurrah was last week acquitted in the Alice Springs Supreme Court of assaulting his cousin in a brawl last year.

The footballer is an initiated Warlpiri man from Yuendumu, and the court heard the brawl related to ongoing problems between rival families in the outback town.

He was last year accused of attacking a woman with a nulla nulla, a type of traditional Aboriginal club, but prosecutors did not proceed with that charge.
