Liberal member growth key: Textor

Liberal campaign veteran Mark Textor says the party needs to return to "retail politics" and grow its membership if its to remain electorally competitive.

Liberal campaign veteran Mark Textor has warned the party won't win elections if it can't grow its membership and get members more involved.

Mr Textor said the Labour campaign in the recent UK elections showed what can be achieved when grassroots members were motivated.

He said Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn had a "very motivated and hard-working" party base, which also effectively used digital media in a campaign that rocked the May government.

Two weeks into the British election campaign, the experienced pollster had lunch with former prime minister John Howard.

Mr Howard had said he was worried about the decline in "retail politics" - making sure that building roads and tunnels and delivering budget surpluses "mean something to people in their communities".

"All the things we do must be translated into old-school retail politics," Mr Textor told a special Liberal convention in Sydney on Saturday.

But the retail politics must be done by recruiting more members to talk to family and work colleagues, and to doorknock and pass on key political messages on the internet.

"If this party does not enhance and grow the membership then none of that matters," Mr Textor said.

He said voters were not interested in labels such as left, right or centre.

"They are interested in what our values are and how those values translate into real world results," he said.
