Liberal MP sidesteps gay marriage question

Gay marriage advocates are sending leaflets to voters in Liberal MP Teresa Gambaro's seat of Brisbane, which she holds by a slim 1.1 per cent margin.

The Liberal MP representing the most marginal federal seat in Queensland is sidestepping questions about her views on same sex marriage.

Gay marriage advocates are sending leaflets to voters in Teresa Gambaro's seat of Brisbane, which she holds by a slim 1.1 per cent.

Asked about the more socially liberal views of her constituents, Ms Gambaro said an electoral survey of 1000 constituents, by her office, was not a big enough sample to show overwhelming support for marriage equality.

"One per cent of my constituents replied to that survey and out of that one per cent, which is a thousand or so people, 70 per cent supported gay marriage," she told reporters in Brisbane.

"We're talking about one per cent."

The opposition parliamentary secretary pointed out that her seat included more than Brisbane's city centre.

"I represent a very diverse seat and I have a large number of families, suburban areas, and I am taking soundings from all of my constituents," Ms Gambaro said.

"It's just not made up of the inner city and can I tell you there are differing views."

The state Liberal National Party MP for Brisbane Central Robert Cavallucci supports same sex marriage, as does Wyatt Roy, the 23-year old federal Liberal MP for the outer northern Brisbane seat of Longman.

Labor's candidate for Brisbane Fiona McNamara also backs same sex marriage.
