Liberal MPs have chided Opposition Leader Tony Abbott for allowing the Nationals too much influence over coalition policy.

His colleagues are also upset their boss failed to consult them over changes to superannuation policy, News Ltd and Fairfax Media report.

Party sources have revealed Mr Abbott verbally slapped down Liberal MPs at a heated party room meeting on Tuesday.

Victorian MP Kelly O'Dwyer, who replaced former treasurer Peter Costello in the Melbourne seat of Higgins, challenged Mr Abbott about his lack of consultation.

News Ltd reports that Mr Abbott replied: "If that's how you think things are done then you should ring your old boss Peter Costello and ask him what he used to do."

Bradfield MP Paul Fletcher also challenged Mr Abbott over the super decision, Fairfax Media said.

In early November, Mr Abbott announced the coalition would reverse its 18-month opposition to a government proposal for superannuation contributions to be increased from nine to 12 per cent by 2020.

It is being funded by the mining tax, which is being voted on this week.

Liberal MPs Alby Schultz, Russell Broadbent, Bill Heffernan, Warren Entsch, Russell Matheson, Ian Macdonald and Alan Eggleston reportedly took aim at the Nationals.
