Liberals disendorse Corio candidate

The Liberals have disendorsed a candidate in the safe Victorian Labor seat of Corio for breaking party rules in his comments to a local newspaper.

A Victorian Liberal candidate running in a safe Labor seat is set to be disendorsed for breaching party rules.

Corio candidate Murray Angus is likely to be booted just a week into the election campaign after he made comments to the local paper, the Geelong Advertiser.

"The Liberal Party has cancelled Murray Angus' endorsement as its candidate for Corio, after he failed to comply with the rules and procedures required by all endorsed Liberal candidates," a party spokesman said.

The motion runs until midnight but is expected to be successful.

Mr Angus was running against shadow defence minister Richard Marles in the Geelong seat.

Mr Marles has held the seat since 2007 and sits on a margin of about 10 per cent.

His former competitor told the Geelong Advertiser this week Mr Marles was a "good bloke" and the 71-year-old couldn't really criticise the sitting MP.

But Mr Angus is not the first candidate to be dropped by the Liberals in Victoria so far this election - at the weekend three candidates had to step down because of their eligibility to sit in parliament.
