A team of United States interrogators has reportedly been using a warship in international waters to question a terror suspect captured in Libya over the weekend.

Anas al-Libi was indicted in 2000 for his alleged involvement in the 1998 bombings of US embassies in Africa.

He is reportedly now being held in military custody aboard the USS San Antonio under the laws of war.

The move has angered Libya, which is asking for an explanation from the U-S over his so-called "extradition" from Tripoli.

Professor Donald Rothwell is an international law expert from the Australian National University.

He spoke with Darren Mara about how the US was able to detain al-Libi without the Libyan government's knowledge or approval.
