After years of having their tastes limited, Libyans are now free to read formerly banned books.

The country has marked the end of the book-banning era with a ceremony at a major public library.

A report in the Toronto Star says political hopefuls, returned exiles and former milita leaders met at the Italianate Royal Palace and gathered around piles of formerly banned books in celebration.

Event organiser Abdulmoneim Abusalem told CNN it's the end of a dark era.
