Queensland's construction watchdog has slapped a restriction onto the building licence of a key contractor for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

The Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) applied the restriction on the local arm of Victorian-based Grocon Constructors on Tuesday.

Under the restriction, the company "must not provide tenders or quotes, or enter into any new contracts, for the performance of building work as defined in the Queensland Building and Construction Commission Act 1991 until it is notified in writing by QBCC".

It's believed the restriction is related to financial concerns.

Grocon is the contractor charged with delivering the Parklands Project for the Queensland government, which will be the site of the athletes' village at the Commonwealth Games, to be held in April.

Last month Grocon agreed to pay over $1 million to unpaid workers after a subcontractor on the Parklands site - Ware Building - went into liquidation.

The state government's Commonwealth Games department says the restriction will not impact on the delivery of the Games village.

"The project remains on track for handover to GOLDOC in early October," a departmental spokesperson said in a statement.
