Liena under threat from major Tas bushfire

Liena in northern Tasmania is subject to an emergency warning, with residents warned now is the time to evacuate.

An emergency warning has been declared for a bushfire raging out of control at Liena in northern Tasmania.

The Tasmania Fire Service says the fire puts Liena at high risk, with burning embers falling on houses in the town and smoke and ash making it difficult to breathe and see.

Residents are advised to leave their homes now if the path out is clear and if their home is unprepared for the fire, and to stay only if their home is prepared and they can actively defend it.

The fire has burned through about 200 hectares of bush within the Mersey Forest, south of Devonport.

Residents are advised to move east along Liena Road towards Mole Creek.

An evacuation centre has been established at the Deloraine Community Complex.
