A Sydney man who used his position as a maths tutor to sexually abuse five children committed offences of "the utmost heinousness" and deserves to spend the rest of his life behind bars, a prosecutor says.
Quy Huy Hoang, 67, was convicted in November last year on 10 counts of sexually and indecently assaulting four girls and one boy between 2007 and 2014.
The children, one as young as three, were students of Hoang, who exploited his position in Sydney's Vietnamese community to gain the confidence of their parents.
The abuse occurred in their family homes, where Hoang brought K-Y Jelly concealed in Blistex lip balm containers.
Crown prosecutor Paul Leask submitted to Sydney District Court on Friday that Hoang's predatory behaviour was his "raison d'etre in life".
"The evidence reliably proves, by reason of the protracted nature and lengthy period of offending, an empty moral and empathetic portrait of Hoang that did not spare anybody," Mr Leask wrote in his sentencing submissions to Judge Kate Traill.
"The consequences of his offending will mark at least two generations.
"The lives of children, and their families, devastated."
Mr Leask said the offences fell within the worst category of sexual assault cases and only the maximum penalty of life imprisonment would suffice.
He said nothing mitigated Hoang's crimes.
"Legislatures do not enact maximum available sentences as mere formalities," he submitted.
"The offending would have continued for so long as the offender was physically able to commit it."
Defence lawyer Todd Pickering disagreed with Mr Leask's assessment.
"Offending in this case is objectively in the middle of the range," Mr Pickering told the court on Friday.
Mr Pickering said there was a strong possibility Hoang would die in jail due to his age.
He will be sentenced on April 8.
