Australia's first Indigenous woman to be elected to the House of Representatives has had her portrait officially unveiled at Parliament House.

The portrait joins others in the The Historic Memorials Collection. The painting portrays Labor MP Linda Burney wears a red outfit by Australian designer Carla Zampatti.

The Wiradjuri woman is the first Aboriginal female to be elected to the Australian House of Representatives.

She won the federal seat of Barton in the 2016 federal election, after serving 13 years in the NSW parliament.

She said she was honoured by the recognition, but said her achievement was only possible because of those who supported her.

"I am humbled because I am reminded that we all serve in this place. We enter this place having been lifted up on the shoulders of many others.

"This is not just about a portrait of me. This is about those who have come before me; and those who come after.

"This is about all of us - and I want to really stress that. There is a little bit of all of us in this painting."
