Police have named a man they wish to speak to about a shooting and carjacking on the Gold Coast.

Police believe the shooting during an interrupted car theft and an earlier carjacking may be linked.

A 48-year-old man was shot once in the stomach just before midnight on Saturday outside his Gaven home after he tried to stop a thief breaking into his car.

He was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and the shooter fled the scene on foot.

Earlier in the evening, a Good Samaritan's car was stolen at gunpoint in Redland Bay after they tried to help the driver of a crashed stolen vehicle.
