Lions brace for AFL life without Cameron

Brisbane will battle on without star recruit Charlie Cameron while Essendon have a point to prove in their Gabba clash on Sunday.

A season-ending injury to Charlie Cameron is just another twist in Brisbane's winding AFL journey and not a roadblock, according to coach Chris Fagan.

The Lions (1-10) will need to find inspiration elsewhere at the Gabba against Essendon (4-7) on Sunday after the livewire suffered a frustrating foot injury last weekend.

The speedy goal sneak had been a revelation since joining from Adelaide, relishing his leadership role to kick a team-high 17 goals this season.

The 23-year-old's absence will hurt Fagan's young side but he says it will also provide them with their next test.

"Squads win premierships and it's not ideal that Charlie's out but it gives someone else an opportunity," he said.

"We need to find out more about our players and what other options we have if he's not there.

"Injuries come along and you need to have that depth ... spirits are good."

Essendon arrive at the Gabba, where the Lions have been extremely competitive this season, keen to prove a point after a 71-point thrashing by Richmond last weekend.

That loss followed heartening victories against Greater Western Sydney and Geelong and coach John Worsfold wants to see them return to that level.

"We were disappointed with some of the footy we played; we weren't at our best and want to bounce back to that," he said.

"They've a very talented list, the Lions; they're going to bring plenty of heat, plenty of pressure."

Essendon has lost David Zaharakis to a collarbone injury for at least six weeks, while Jordan Ridley (knee) will also miss at least a week.

Allen Christensen (concussion) and Hugh McCluggage (calf) will be put through their paces on Saturday while Sam Mayes has earned a recall for what will be his 100th game.

Meanwhile, in-form former No.6 draft pick Aaron Francis is edging closer to an AFL return after being named an emergency.

Francis was denied a trade at the end of last season and took several weeks off in February to deal with a mental health issue.
