Lions coach mindful of player fatigue

His Brisbane side may unbeaten after two rounds of the AFL Women's season but Craig Starcevich expects the rigours of football to catch up with them soon.

The Brisbane Lions are unbeaten after two rounds of the AFL Women's season, but coach Craig Starcevich is mindful that the rigours of playing elite football may catch up on his side at some point. The Lions held on for a 13-point win over the Fremantle Dockers on Sunday, backing up their 15-point win over Melbourne in round one. After two games on the road they are third on the ladder.Starcevich said that the girls would have a light week ahead of their home debut, against Collingwood on Saturday, at South Pine Sports Complex."Recovery (will be the focus)," he said. "It's a quick turnaround."The girls are on the crest of a wave, but at some point the body is going to catch up with them and tell them that I need to start looking after myself."We will make sure they recover the best they can and not do too much on the track this week and get ready for Collingwood on Saturday."The best player on the ground on Sunday was 19-year-old Tayla Harris, who moved herself from attack to defence late in the game without instruction and put a halt to several Dockers attacks. She also kicked the sealer, her second goal of the game, late in the final term, after taking a spectacular pack mark. She finished with 12 possessions and seven marks - most of them contested.Earlier, the Lions ruck 20-year-old Sabrina Frederick-Traub was outstanding in the middle of the ground. She gave her midfielders first use of the football, kicked an important goal of her own and set up another. While young, the pair are the marquee players for the Lions and Starcevich has no doubt they made the right decision at the draft table."I think people thought - actually I'm not sure what they thought when we went for two babies - 19 and 20-year-olds," he said."But what they bring to the table is very valuable to the team and for our club down the track is going to be super valuable. Both quality people, both extraordinary athletes and today both had a major impact on the result."
