Lions get big IPL win over Kolkata

The Gujarat Lions have beaten the Kolkata Knight Riders by six wickets, as a mid-pitch collision ended Aaron Finch's innings.

A superb bowling effort from Dwayne Smith has helped the Gujarat Lions to a six-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders and second place on the Indian Premier League table.

After being sent in to bat, Kolkata notched up an underwhelming 8-124 in the match in Kanpur on Thursday, as man-of-the-match Smith collected four wickets in four overs, conceding just eight runs.

The Knight Riders were ready to fight back as they took the field, with Smith being caught off the opening delivery from Ankit Rajpoot.

New Zealand's Brendon McCullum (6) looked set to get the Lions going as he smashed a six into the stands on his first ball, but was trapped lbw off Sunil Narine minutes later.

However, the Lions made significant headway when Australia's Aaron Finch (26) joined Suresh Raina (53 not out) at the crease, the pair putting on a 59-run partnership before Finch was run out as the pair collided while running for three.

Raina continued to pile on the runs, and eleven from Ravindra Jadeja sealed the win with 39 balls remaining.
