Brisbane coach Justin Leppitsch liked what he saw with his team kicking 15 goals against West Coast on Sunday and is confident if the Lions take better care of the ball they can make some big steps forward in 2016.
Despite losing to last year's grand finalists by 64 points at Domain Stadium, the Lions continued to fight and kicking 15 goals showed they did a lot of things right.
Conceding 26 won't mean the Lions win too many games but Leppitsch put at least 10 of those down to direct skill errors and he is confident of cutting down on those.
"They walked into goal 10 times off our turnovers. If you don't do that, they don't do that and it goes the other way," Leppitsch said.
"We just have to make sure we keep attacking the game, that's the most important thing we can do. We play our worst footy when we go into our shells so I want us to continue this. If you can kick 100 points at Domain Stadium you are doing something right."
There was plenty to like from the Lions particularly Daniel Rich being back to his lethal best with 23 touches and two goals.
Tom Bell (24 disposals), Ryan Bastinac (23), Mitch Robinson (23) and underdone captain Tom Rockliff (21) found plenty of ball too.
The forward-line looked dangerous with Lewis Taylor and Allen Christensen kicking three goals each at ground level. Josh Schache and Josh Walker kicked two each in their first games for the club.
Leppitsch was happy with the debut of No.2 draft pick Schache but knows the Lions are a long way from having a performance like Josh Kennedy's eight goals from 16 marks up the other end for West Coast.
"Josh was alright, he was good. It was a difficult night but you can see the experience in our three keys compared to theirs," Leppitsch said.
"They were dominant in their position and ours were solid, but not spectacular. I thought for a first night on debut in a difficult night on Perth he did pretty well. I thought he was solid in what he did."
