Lions watch weather ahead of AFL cup clash

Brisbane Lions have reportedly offered to host St Kilda on Monday as wet weather threatens their weekend AFL pre-season cup clash in Mackay.

Brisbane have reportedly offered to host St Kilda on Monday as wet weather threatens to sabotage their weekend NAB Challenge clash in Mackay.

Torrential rain has lashed the north Queensland city in recent days and shows no sign of relenting in the next week.

It is sounding alarm bells for full strength Brisbane and Saints squads ahead of their first meaningful pre-season hit-out.

Both clubs were welcoming back their stars for the clash at Harrup Park.

Lions CEO Greg Swann said he had spoken to the Saints about postponing the match until Monday and holding it in Brisbane.

"It is obviously the AFL's decision but, if the weather is so bad that it is dangerous for all the players, we've talked to the Saints about playing down here on the Monday," Swann told News Corp Australia.

A Lions official said they still planned to fly out on Saturday to Mackay.

The Lions will welcome back the likes of captain Tom Rockliff, Stef Martin, Dayne Zorko, Daniel Merrett and Pearce Hanley for the clash.

The Saints were set to boast captain Nick Riewoldt, David Armitage, Leigh Montagna, Jarryn Geary and Sam Fisher for the first time this pre-season.
