Under pressure from pro-government supporters intimidating journalists even on the grounds of their hotel, Thomson reports that battles have raged on the street.

'Masses of anti-government protesters began to leave Tahrir Square and take on the pro-government people', he said.

'There were pitched battles, it looked like a civil war more than everything else.'

But at the end of a violent day, a relative calm took over the streets.

'It seems anti-government supporters have got the upper hand', he said.

'Despite everything that has been thrown at them, they have foced the pro-government people to retreat.'
