Liverpool have confirmed forward Sadio Mane will undergo season-ending knee surgery on Tuesday.

The Senegal international sustained meniscus damage in his left knee during last weekend's Merseyside derby against Everton and it was initially hoped he could avoid surgery.

"The decision to correct the problem and give Mane enough time to recuperate ahead of the new campaign was the most sensible course of action," Liverpool said on their website on Monday.

"A two-month recovery period is anticipated."

The 25-year-old has had an outstanding debut season following his move from Southampton last year.
