Nigel Llong, the umpire in the middle when last year's DRS spat between Steve Smith and Virat Kohli erupted, has been asked to control next week's first Test at Adelaide Oval.

Llong and Kumar Dharmasena will umpire the four-Test series opener between Australia and India at Adelaide Oval, which starts on December 6.

The International Cricket Council's chief match referee Ranjan Madugalle will be in the hot seat to handle any issues in the first Test.

Both camps have made it clear they want to let their cricket do the talking this summer but the widespread expectation is there will be some heated moments, as has been the case in recent series between the rivals.

There were a stack of spot fires throughout last year's brutal Border-Gavaskar battle but the most tense came in Bangalore, where Smith illegally looked to support staff for guidance on whether to review an lbw verdict.

Llong immediately intervened, sending Smith on his way, while a furious Kohli stormed across the pitch and approached Smith.

An apologetic Smith described it as a "brain fade" in his post-match press conference but Kohli raged, alleging the "umpires knew exactly what was going on".

"They've been doing that for the last three days and it has to stop," Kohli claimed.

"I saw that happening two times when I was batting out there. I pointed it out to the umpires ... that's why I was adamant."

Smith returned serve.

"In regards to saying that we do it consistently, that's complete rubbish ... I don't think he was out there long enough for two appeals," Smith said at the time.

Kohli, speaking after his team recently landed in Brisbane, noted "if the opposition are aggressive towards you then you will counter it".

"We are a team that don't start anything," Kohli said.
