LNP sacking prompts tighter screening

LNP President Bruce McIver has promised a more rigorous screening process for potential candidates after the expulsion of Redcliffe MP Scott Driscoll.

The Liberal National Party (LNP) has promised to toughen up its screening of candidates after a spate of high profile expulsions and resignations of Queensland MPs.

LNP president Bruce McIver says Redcliffe MP Scott Driscoll was expelled from the party because he dishonoured the trust of voters and the party.

Mr Driscoll is being investigated for allegedly secretly controlling a community group from his electorate office and paying his wife tens of thousands of dollars in consultancy fees.

"(The expulsion was) not driven by the media but driven by natural justice," he told party faithful and its annual convention on Friday.

Mr McIver said defectors Ray Hopper, Carl Judge and Alex Douglas also broke the trust of the LNP and their electorates when they decided to quit and join different parties.

He promised potential future candidates they will face rigorous background checks.

"It is a rigorous process and we intend to try to stiffen it more," he said.

"You must be prepared for your whole background and past actions to be scrutinised.

"As an LNP member of parliament you must comply with the highest professional and personal standards expected by both the party and the general community."

The LNP annual convention continues until Sunday.
