A Liberal National Party senator is on the receiving end of a social media backlash after he took to Facebook to share a photo of a dead cockatoo caught in the roof rack of his car.

James McGrath's post is accompanied by the caption "Car 1. Flock of cockatoos 0."

The image has attracted widespread criticism with many users accusing the senator of boasting about the bird's death.
"This photo really proves a lack of compassion and respect for our precious, unique wildlife. You’ve definitely lost my vote Senator," one viewer writes.

Another comment questions the Senator's understanding of Australia's wildlife.

"Mate, that bird is a native Aussie. To love Australia is to love, respect and protect our native flora and fauna."

Others were quick to question the purpose of the post.

"While accidents happen and while unintentional, to post this shows a lack of moral values and compassion. Typical politician," another comment read.

Wildlife Rescue Sunshine Coast has hit out at Senator McGrath's post, labelling it "bad form" and "not appropriate."
SBS News has contacted Senator McGrath's office for comment.
