News Corp Australia chief executive Peter Tonagh has been appointed the new boss of Foxtel.

Mr Tonagh will replace Richard Freudenstein in the top job at the pay TV operator, who is stepping down at the end of April after four and a half years in charge.

Foxtel is jointly owned by News Corp and Telstra.
