A prison in central west NSW went into lockdown after dozens of inmates were involved in a fight.

Bathurst prison went temporarily into lockdown on Tuesday after an incident in the jail's accommodation area.

According to the ABC, there were 76 inmates involved in the fight which took 90 minutes to quell.

Gas was used to try and contain the prisoners and one guard was injured, the union representing prison officers told the ABC.

It has been reported the incident began as an argument between two inmates that escalated as officers tried to stop the fight.
