With thousands farewelling rugby legend Jonah Lomu in a huge service at Auckland's Eden Park on Monday, those closest to him will get a chance to say goodbye in a more intimate way.

The star's friends and family will gather for a private service to be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meeting house in Mangere, Auckland.

In a statement the church said the funeral would begin at 10am, with a video feed being broadcast to four of its other churches across the city where others wanting to pay their respects were welcome.

The private funeral follows a massive ceremony at Auckland's Eden Park on Monday, attended by thousands.

Filled with musical numbers and touching tributes from past teammates, teachers and rugby figureheads, fans from around the world gathered to remember Lomu's greatest moments, both on and off the field.

The All Black great died suddenly aged 40 at his home in Auckland on November 18.

He had battled nephrotic syndrome for much of his life and had been on dialysis for four years after his body rejected a transplanted kidney.
