There was "some loss of life" and 50 people were injured after a tram overturned in south London's Croydon area early Wednesday, police and firefighters say.

Emergency services were called to the Sandlands tram stop just early on Wednesday morning and were still working to free trapped people by mid-morning, British Transport Police said.

"A number of people have been taken to hospital with injuries and sadly it looks as though there has been some loss of life," the police said in a statement.

London Fire Brigade Deputy Assistant Commissioner Andy Roe, who led the firefighters' response, said his teams had "released a number of people and two people remain trapped".

Peter McKenna, deputy director of operations for the London Ambulance Service, said paramedics had treated "a number of patients at the scene" and taken 51 people to two nearby London hospitals.
