Long waiting list for WA public housing

The average waiting time for public housing in Western Australia has blown out to 158 weeks, or just over three years.

Waiting times for public housing in Western Australia have blown out to three years, according to the opposition.

Labor housing spokesman Fran Logan said the average waiting time had increased by 12 weeks in the past year to 158 weeks.

The state government added 241 properties to its public housing stock last year, 40 fewer than the previous year, Mr Logan said.

WA Housing Minister Colin Holt said the state government had invested $560 million in a social housing investment package, aimed at halving the current priority housing list by 2017.

In an emailed statement, the WA Housing Authority blamed a policy change for the growth in the general waiting list, saying it had to house more people from the priority list.

"This means applicants on the general wait list will wait longer," the authority said.

The Authority housed 5640 households in the 2014-15 financial year.
