Long weekend in NSW full of mozzies

Perfect breeding conditions over the summer mean NSW campsites near salt marshes and mangroves will be full of mosquitoes

It's going to be the attack of the mozzies this Australia Day weekend, thanks to perfect breeding conditions across some of NSW's most popular campsites.

Experts say king tides over the Christmas period have led to an increase in mosquito numbers in coastal areas in greater Sydney, the Illawarra, the mid north coast and the Northern Rivers region.

"This has contributed to increasing the speed of the mosquitoes' life cycles," said Bryce Peters, an entomologist from the University of Technology, Sydney.

He said high temperatures and increased humidity have resulted in a rise in mosquito activity.

"They are producing quicker, and this climate is also prolonging their life."
