After Queenslanders Dean and Tanya Griffioen were killed in a head-on collision on a highway in central Uganda, looters robbed their bodies.
Now eight people have been arrested and charged in Mubende district, where the accident took place.
The couple, aged 33 and 34, were killed on November 4 when their motorbike was struck by a four-wheel-drive, which had crossed over to their side of the road when it was overtaking another vehicle.
"We arrested the eight people who are suspected from stealing from the dead Australian couple. They were charged in court and remanded in Mubende prison," police officer Felix Okello said.
He said the arrested included three women. They allegedly ransacked the pockets of the couple and removed money; they also stole other items.
"We found some of them with US dollars they had stolen from the Australians," Mr Okello said.
In Uganda, the first thing passers-by do at an accident scene is to loot from the dead or those still alive, before offering a helping hand.
Uganda's inspector-general of police, Kale Kayihura, on Wednesday said police were planning to lobby for a law against stealing from the dead, the state-owned newspaper New Vision reported.
"How can you steal from a dead body? It is a shame. Others do not only steal, but even kill those they find still alive, to grab their items."
The driver of the vehicle that collided with the Griffioens is still on the run. Police have identified him as Anania Omugabe.
