Amateur world No.1 Curtis Luck has been paired in the third round of the Masters with 1987 champion Larry Mize, who almost 30 years to the day broke Australian hearts.

Now 58, Augusta native Mize famously chipped in for birdie on the second extra playoff hole to deny Greg Norman the coveted green jacket in 1987.

Mize booked a third-round date with Luck, who wasn't even born when he won his only green jacket, after carding a four-over 76 to go with his two-over score on Thursday.

Luck showed fighting spirit to grind out a gutsy even-par 72 on day two to earn himself a second chance at the Masters - making the six-over cut line on the number in his major championship debut.

And the 20-year-old plans to take full advantage in the closing rounds as he looks to beat American amateur Stewart Hagestad (three over) to the Masters silver medal for the lowest-scoring amateur.

Luck, who won his way to Augusta courtesy of victories at the 2016 US Amateur and Asia Pacific Amateur, plans to turn professional immediately after the Masters.

He says he'll swing freely in his final two rounds as an amateur.

"There's no pressure at all for the last two days, so it might give me a pass to go at a few more flags," said Luck.

"Ultimately, it isn't going to matter because it's not like I'm playing for money out here. I'll just have fun."

Luck will also look to forget a "sickening" moment from the second round when he hit a spectator in the face with a hooked tee shot on the fourth hole.

"I snap-hooked a three-wood and hit someone square in the forehead," he said.

"I got up there and he was bleeding, it wasn't very nice. I felt like I was going to vomit for two holes, I just felt horrific after.

"But luckily they had the medical cart out there and all I could do is say sorry."
