Lynch to quit after Super League season

Veteran Castleford prop Andy Lynch, who's about to record his 500th career game, has announced his retirement at the end of the Super League season in England.

Veteran Castleford prop Andy Lynch has announced his retirement at the end of the Super League season.

On Sunday, the 37-year-old will make the 500th appearance of a career in which he has also represented Bradford - helping them win the 2006 World Club Challenge - Hull, England and Great Britain.

Lynch sits second in Super League's appearance list and could break Kevin Sinfield's record of 454 before the end of the campaign.

Lynch, Super League's oldest player, told Castleford's official website: "It's an amazing achievement for me to up there with the best, and some great guys - Rob Burrow, Keith Senior and Kevin Sinfield, to name a few. I'm really proud to reach this fantastic milestone in my career.

"I discussed it a lot with my wife April and we decided it's the right time for me now to look to the next chapter of my life.

"My three boys are at that age now where I need to be there more at the weekend, they are all playing sports and I've already missed out on a lot with them."

Lynch started his career at Castleford, advancing through the academy before making his professional debut in 1999, and was hoping to end it with the Tigers winning silverware.

Daryl Powell's side, ahead of Sunday's clash with struggling Warrington, are four points clear at the top of Super League and face Hull next week in the Challenge Cup quarter-finals.

"To bring a trophy back to this club and this town would mean everything to me," Lynch added.

"It's been part of my life since I was 15. I love this club and I will always be a Castleford fan.
