Lyon expects Starc to return for NSW soon

Nathan Lyon expects Australian spearhead Mitchell Starc to return from injury towards the end of NSW's one-day cup.

Mitchell Starc will miss the start of NSW's one-day campaign as he continues to recover from a foot injury, but Nathan Lyon expects to see the big quick in action soon.

Starc was left out of the Blues' 14-man squad for the one-day cup but selectors are hopeful the left-armer will be given the green light to play later in the tournament.

Australia's new-ball pairing Starc and Josh Hazlewood are both sidelined but expected to play some Sheffield Shield cricket before the first Ashes Test that starts on November 23 at the Gabba.

Starc was sent home from the Test tour of India in March with a stress fracture. He was rushed back for the Champions Trophy, with medicos now taking a more cautious approach.

Lyon said he was confident the left-arm quick would turn out for the Blues before the end of the tournament.

"I think he'll be involved later on in the back end of the tournament," the offspinner said in Sydney on Tuesday.

Starc's progress will be monitored throughout the domestic one-day competition that runs until October 21.

The 27-year old hopes to be given the all clear soon but may have to wait until the Blues' Shield opener, a pink-ball clash starting on October 27, to make his return.

Paceman Mickey Edwards, who became a cult figure while serving as a substitute fielder during this year's SCG Test, is set to make his NSW debut in the absence of Starc and Hazlewood.

Captain Moises Henriques was left out of the 14-man squad. He will lead NSW in their tournament opener against Western Australia on September 29 before departing for the Twenty20 series in India.

NSW 14-man squad: Sean Abbott, Doug Bollinger, Harry Conway, Ed Cowan, Mickey Edwards, Ryan Gibson, Daniel Hughes, Jay Lenton, Nathan Lyon, Nic Maddinson, Arjun Nair, Peter Nevill, Kurtis Patterson, Gurinder Sandhu.
