Lyon ready to roar in one-day cricket

NSW Blues cricket captain Moises Henriques expects Nathan Lyon to use the local one-day competition to push his claim for a recall to the Australian ODI team.

NSW Blues captain Moises Henriques is tipping Test spinner Nathan Lyon to use the domestic-one day cricket competition as a platform to put himself in contention for a spot in the Australian one-day team.

Off sinner Lyon is unchallenged Australia's top Test tweaker after taking 22 wickets in the recent two-match series in Bangladesh.

He's the most prolific wicket-taking Test finger spinner Australia has ever produced and seems to be at the peak of his powers.

While he's played 69 Tests, Lyon has only been selected for 13 ODI's and hasn't been chosen for a limited overs game this year.

Incumbent Australian ODI spinners Ashton Agar and Adam Zampa have both averaged more than 60 in taking just three wickets between them during the series in India and have each gone for six-and-a-half runs per over.

Lyon proved he could be frugal and a match winner in the limited overs format, with a man-of-the-match performance in last season's domestic one-day competition final.

"What Gaz (Lyon) can do -- and we saw it in the Test matches over there (in Bangladesh) -- he can take wickets the whole way throughout and that's what you want in a one-day game," Henriques said.

"We've seen it with the attacking Indian spinners, ... that they've just taken wickets the whole way through the middle of their (Australian) innings, which continually puts pressure on the batting side.

"Gaz is a wicket taker in one-day cricket, and we've seen it when he comes back and played for the Sixers in T20 cricket.

"He's won us a few games and last year in the Matador (one-day) final he took 4-10 off his 10 overs and he just kept taking wickets throughout those middle overs.

"Hes' such an attacking bowler that you can almost set more defensive fields and let his aggressive bowling nature take over.

"I'm sure he wants to play (ODI'S) and it's just a matter of the opportunity for someone like Nathan.

"He's going to have a great opportunity this year in the JLT Cup (domestic one-day competition) to put forward his one-day cricketing prowess."
