Lyon to swing selection axe at Fremantle

Fremantle coach Ross Lyon says he'll swing the selection axe after his side was thrashed by Port Adelaide by 89 points in Sunday's AFL match.

Coach Ross Lyon says he's sharpening his selection axe in response to Fremantle's woeful start to the AFL season.

Lyon's Dockers were thumped by 89 points by Port Adelaide on Sunday to be winless and last on the ladder after two rounds.

While he concedes "the buck stops with me", he forecast dumping players after Port took top spot with a 22.13 (145) to 8.8 (56) belting of his Dockers.

"I'm not separating myself from the players. The buck stops with me, I have never shied away from that," Lyon said.

"You take your bouquets and you take your hits. So clearly there's some hits to come."

But Lyon said personnel changes must be made after his side folded meekly and rapidly against Port, conceding six goals within the initial 15 minutes and never fighting back.

Lyon said sloppy skills and costly turnovers "ripped the heart out of our team".

"We will have to make some changes on the back of that ... we just can't keep rolling on with the same personnel," he said.

"It's not abdicating responsibility as a coach but it's a real bugbear at the minute. "We stuck with the group, we showed faith, we didn't get delivered on. So now we need to act."

Lyon said he would also examine his coaching methods.

"It's a really tough time because we are a long way off," he said.

"I was in some deep holes early in my (coaching) career at the Saints but I suppose these things challenge you.

"I expect to be going better than we have.

"So yeah, its a challenge but I feel really calm and controlled. My coaching group is working. We have just got work through it."

Port boss Ken Hinkley has no such worries after his outfit followed their season-opening away win against Sydney with the resounding victory.

But he cautioned against getting carried away.

"I am really pleased about our two performances so far this year, there's no doubt about that," Hinkley said.

"But it's early in the season. All things get exaggerated at the start of the season, I reckon."

Hinkley said he would enjoy the win over the Dockers, reluctant to instantly turn his mind to next Saturday night's clash against home-town rivals and second-placed Adelaide, who are also unbeaten.

The fixture will be the first South Australia derby with the clubs perched one-two.
