Mackay man diagnosed with Zika virus

Queensland public health officials will assess an area of South Mackay after a man was diagnosed with Zika virus.

A Mackay man has been diagnosed with Zika virus after returning from a trip to Mexico.

The Mackay Public Health Unit says there is no immediate risk of anyone else contracting the virus and a mosquito control team will travel from Townsville to Mackay.

Authorities will assess an area in South Mackay to see if there are populations of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which carry Zika.

The man was diagnosed after visiting his GP and remains at home.

He does not need hospital treatment, Queensland Health said.

Director of Public Health Dr Richard Gair said it was important that people do not panic because there had never been a case of locally-acquired Zika in Australia.

"We will assess the risk of mosquitoes transmitting the virus and will provide further advice to the public once we have done a physical inspection of the area near the man's home," he said.

The incident follows another case in Cairns that was confirmed on Monday involving a man who had returned from Thailand and Bali.

Zika virus is spread by one type of mosquito that lives only around buildings and breeds in fresh water.

The mosquito is common in northern Queensland towns, with smaller numbers in some areas of central and south west Queensland.

Residents were urged to take general control measures such as emptying any containers that hold water in their yards.

The health department said ordinary surface or insect spray should be used to wipe out any mosquitoes in homes.
