Macklin sheds new light on justice plan

The Federal Minister for Indigenous Affairs has provided more details on how justice will be included in the 'Close the Gap' targets.

Jenny Macklin has announced that the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency's Cilla Collins will lead a new advisory group to develop the ALP's targets.

The federal indigenous afairs minister said justice will be added to the ALP's close-the-gap targets if the government is re-elected on September 7.

"We have a huge amount to do and that's why we want to get this focus on a new justice target," she said.

"We do think that having a clear properly funded framework, as we've had for the last five years, with clear close-the-gap targets that focuses our policy effort, does bring about change and we know that's necessary in the justice area."

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders make up just 2.5 per cent of the country's population but account for 26 per cent of Australia's prison population.

Ms Macklin said the initiative would aim to reduce these numbers.
