Gold Coast surfer Macy Callaghan is riding the crest of a wave after making her first final on the World Surf League tour.

Callaghan, who is only competing at the Roxy Pro France as an injury replacement, upstaged WSL fixture Coco Ho in their quarter-final on Friday and then backed up to eliminate compatriot Bronte Macaulay.

She meets another WSL veteran Courtney Conlogue in the decider at Hossegor on the southwest coast near Biarritz.

Callaghan made her WSL debut last year and France is her seventh event this season - her previous best was a ninth in the familiar surrounds of the Gold Coast in March.

She recorded 13.60 points to knock out Hawaii's Ho by a comfortable margin and then dominated West Australian Macaulay, who was appearing in her first semi-final of the season.

Callaghan won with a two wave score of 14.33 points while Macaulay, who earlier eliminated Brazil's Tatiana Weston-Webb, could only muster 10.73.

American Conlogue recorded 14.14 against Hawaii's Carissa Moore (13.26) to make the final.

Callaghan and Macaulay emerged as Australia's focal points with six-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore eliminated after finishing last in her third round heat on Thursday.

She still remains on track for a record-equalling seventh title because she carries a handy points lead over sole challenger Lakey Peterson into the final event in Maui next month.

The American was unable to bridge the gap when she also bowed out in the third round.
