Magpie Elliott set to miss AFL opener

Jamie Elliott's absence from Collingwood training is a blow to his hopes of being ready for round one of the new AFL season.

Forward Jamie Elliott looks set to join star recruit Daniel Wells as Collingwood casualties for the start of the AFL season.

Elliott did not train on Friday, a session that was crucial to him pushing his claims for an unlikely selection for the round-one match in a week against the Western Bulldogs.

After missing all of last season with a back injury, he hurt an ankle last month.

Elliott has kicked 104 goals in 72 AFL matches and, when fit, he is an important part of the Magpies' attack.

Wells has struggled with calf-muscle issues and has not played any pre-season games after his high-profile move from North Melbourne.

The Magpies confirmed the obvious earlier this week when they said he would not play in round one.

But captain Scott Pendlebury and fellow onballer Jordan De Goey trained solidly on Friday.

Pendlebury was a late withdrawal from last weekend's pre-season win over Richmond.

He and Collingwood have been confident since that the star onballer will play against the Bulldogs, saying last weekend's withdrawal had been precautionary.

De Goey has come back from a thigh injury and Friday's session is a boost for his round-one selection claims.

Collingwood will go into the start of the season with a healthy list, but they are mindful the same applied a year ago.

Brownlow Medallist Dane Swan suffered a career-ending injury in the opening minutes of the season and it proved the start of a plague of bad luck with injuries for the Magpies.

They lost five of their opening seven matches and missed the finals for the third-straight season.
