Magpie Fasolo to miss AFL with depression

Collingwood's Alex Fasolo will take a short break from playing AFL as he manages depression.

Collingwood forward Alex Fasolo will miss his side's AFL clash with Fremantle after revelations he is suffering depression.

The 24-year-old is set for a short break from football as he manages his health, but is expected to return to competitive action in the near future.

"Alex Fasolo will take what is expected to be a short break from playing as he manages the challenge of depression," the club said on Tuesday in a statement.

"He will continue to train and prepare for football with the expectation of a swift return to playing.

"It is requested that Fasolo's privacy be respected."

The Magpies face Fremantle on Sunday in Fasolo's home state of Western Australia, before the traditional Queen's Birthday clash with Melbourne the following week.

Lance Franklin, Mitch Clark, Wayne Schwass and Nathan Thompson are among a number of past and present players who have had battles in recent years with mental health issues.

Fasolo has kicked 118 goals in 91 games for Collingwood since his 2011 debut. He booted two in the Magpies' 45-point victory on Sunday over Brisbane.
