Collingwood's injury-ravaged AFL season has claimed another casualty, with defender Lynden Dunn to miss the rest of the year with a major knee injury.

The 31-year-old will undergo season-ending surgery after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee against Gold Coast on Saturday.

Dunn has impressed in 31 games since switching from Melbourne ahead of the 2017 season.

His loss is a huge blow to the Magpies who moved into second place on the ladder with their win over the Suns.

"Lynden has been exceptional in defence this season, and so important to our structure," Pies football boss Geoff Walsh said.

"His experience has been a steadying influence for our young backline, particularly this year in the absence of Tyson Goldsack."

Dunn joins a string of key Pies, including Jamie Elliott (ankle, hamstring), Darcy Moore (hamstring), Ben Reid (calf), Travis Varcoe (hamstring), Levi Greenwood (knee), Josh Smith (hamstring) and Goldsack (knee) to miss significant time this season.

The 196-game veteran has never played in a final, the longest streak among active players, and is out of contract at the end of the season.
