Mahathir to be sworn in as Malaysian PM

Delayed swearing-in for Malaysia's Mahathir Mohamad

Mahathir Mohamad, whose opposition coalition has won a surprising election victory in Malaysia, will be sworn in as prime minister at the Royal Palace in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday night, state media reports.

The ceremony is scheduled to take place at 9.30pm local time (1330 GMT), Bernama wrote on Twitter.

It was originally scheduled for 5pm but was delayed for unspecified reasons.

Mahathir's son, Mukhriz Mahathir, wrote on Facebook: "After a long wait, my father Mahathir has been welcomed to be sworn in as Malaysia's prime minister at 9:30 pm tonight. Praise be to God."

The 92-year-old Mahathir will be the world's oldest head of government after defeating incumbent Najib Razak.
