Major earthquake hits Alaska coast

A 7.3-magnitude earthquake has hit the southern coast of Alaska.

A 7.3-magnitude earthquake has hit the southern coast of Alaska, striking 50 kilometres east southeast of Pedro Bay.

The quake was recorded at a depth of 124.8km at 1030 GMT (2130 AEDT), the US Geological Survey says.

The USGS said the quake set off tremors felt more than 280km away in the US state's biggest city Anchorage.

Twitter users reported feeling shaking, but there were no immediate reports of casualties in the region.

"Long and pretty strong earthquake and power out in West Anchorage," wrote David Hulen.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said it was not anticipating a destructive tsunami and that there was no threat to Hawaii from the quake.
